Gloria started a gradual
construction of collection and cooling centers
in the different southern valleys, thus
achieving the following growth:
- On September 11, 1945,
the Vitor cooling plant started operating
to attend to the growing needs of the
Vitor Irrigation Project, the first stage
of the La Joya Irrigation system.
- On April 17, 1956, the
Pampacolca plant followed, with the upper
areas of the Province of Castilla as its
area of influence.
- On July 1, 1961, the
Camiara plant started operating in the
Department of Tacna.
- On April 11, 1962, the
plant in Puquina, in the Department of
Moquegua, started operations collecting
milk from the local dairy cattle.
- Furthermore, in December
1964, the Mejía plant was installed
in the Province of Islay, Department of
Arequipa, to attend and receive the production
from the Tambo Valley and the irrigation
areas of Mollendo, Mejía and La
Ensenada.
- On April 28, 1968, operations
started at the cooling plant of Aplao,
in the Majes Valley, capital of the Province
of Castilla.
- Once the much longed
for Majes Irrigation Project was underway
in October 1970, and given the progress
attained in the construction of irrigation
channels, in 1978 the Company installed
a collection and cooling plant for the
Santa Rita de Siguas Irrigation area,
which started operations on November 5
of that same year.
These centers became the
hubs for the promotion and development of
dairy cattle breeding.
During the
60´s, significant innovation continued
in the Arequipa manufacturing plant, one
of the most important being the installation
of the state-of-the-art continuous process
sterilizers, which increased the production
capacity to meet the ever growing demand
of the country’s population. By the
end of the 70´s, a new evaporator
was purchased and installed at the Vitor
Plant to process milk from the usual collection
areas.
In 1985,
the Swiss company Nestlé became the
majority owner of Gloria S.A. when it purchased
the Carnation Company abroad.
In March
1986, José Rodríguez Banda
S.A. purchased the majority share interest
of Gloria S.A., owned by Peruvian shareholders.
Likewise, in August of that same year, it
purchased the majority of the share interests
of the Swiss company Nestlé and on
August 5, 1986, José Rodríguez
Banda S.A., as majority shareholder of Gloria
S.A., took over the control of the Company.
From that
date on, improvements have continued. The
improvement and management of overall quality
in all of the Group’s activities were
– and still are – key elements
in the development and future investments
of the new operation, a trend that is maintained
to this day.
The Company
continued the production and marketing of
evaporated milk as its main product and
started producing other dairy products such
as yogurts, when it acquired Sociedad Agraria
Ganadera Luis Martín in 1993, in
the District of Puente Piedra, in Lima,
and with the purchase of Industrial Derivados
Lácteos S.A. (INDERLAC) in 1994,
it entered the market of UHT ready-to-drink
milk products, cream, cheese and fruit juice.
As the largest
market was in the capital city, it was decided
to build the first phase of the Industrial
Complex at Huachipa, Lima, where on January
11, 1999, production of evaporated milk
took off, becoming one of the leading plants
of its kind in the world, featuring state-of-the-art
technology. A year later, the dairy by-products
plant, to produce yogurt and cheese, as
well as milk and juice packaged in UHT cardboard
boxes and bags was concluded
In 1999,
Carnilac S.A. of Cajamarca merged with and
into Gloria S.A., adding aged cheeses to
its own cheese production. The coverage
of fresh milk collection was also expanded
to supply the Industrial Complex with milk
brought from Cajamarca.
In September
of that same year, the Company purchased
the Friesland Peru S.A. assets, located
in the valley of Lurín, in Lima.
This purchase enabled the Group to increase
its supply of evaporated milk in UHT cardboard
containers. At the same time it entered
into an agreement to produce and sell Bella
Holandesa and Yomost products in Peru.
In order
to supply the nationwide market, the Huachipa
Industrial Complex required fresh milk,
thus in 2000, collection areas were expanded
in the coastal areas with the construction
of collection and cooling centers in several
valleys of the Peruvian coast, such as Chincha,
Cañete, Lurín, Huaraz, Huacho,
Trujillo and Chiclayo.
In November
2002 the new Majes Evaporation Plant in
Arequipa began operations making it a great
and significant milestone in the history
of Gloria S.A. This plant carries out the
collection and evaporation of fresh milk
from stables in the dairy basin in the southern
part of the country and supplies this product
to the Huachipa Industrial Complex.
On July
1, 2003, the Milk Concentration Plant of
Trujillo started operations, enabling the
Company to treat milk from Chiclayo in addition
to that of the area, and to supply milk
to the Huachipa Industrial Complex in Lima.
A reliable
market for the dairy cattle farmer, technical
support and other benefits provided by Gloria,
have enabled the growth of this production
activity and the substitution of imported
powdered milk, with the resulting savings
of foreign currency and the creation of
jobs in rural areas by improving income
levels above the poverty line.
These results drove the Company to continue
development of new collection centers, such
as El Empalme and Chota in Cajamarca, Virú
in Trujillo and Huancayo in the country’s
central area.
In 1990
Gloria decided to diversify its line of
business and purchased the following companies
in other areas: in 1990, Farmacéutica
del Pacífico (FARPASA), in 1992,
Centro Papelero; in 1994, the Yura cement
company in Arequipa; in 1995, through Yura,
it purchased Cemento Sur, in Juliaca-Puno
and Industrias Cachimayo in Cuzco, in 1996.
In 2002, it invested in the founding of
Logística del Pacífico, a
company providing services in logistics
to other companies.
Gloria not only increased its investments
in Peru, but also in the neighboring Bolivia,
through the acquisition in 1996 and 1999
of the Pil Andina and Ipilcruz companies
respectively, achieving also a leading position
in the Bolivian dairy market. It now has
three production plants in this country,
located in the three main cities, La Paz,
Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
In 2000,
Gloria expanded to the international market
and it currently supplies its products to
39 countries in South and Central America,
the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa. The
success achieved by its export products
such as evaporated milk and UHT milk products,
sold under its own or customers’ trademarks,-
owes its quality assurance and high standards
to strict production controls and the Company’s
ability to adapt to customer requirements,
i.e. developing special local products for
each and providing advisory services in
the logistics and marketing areas.
In 2002,
after 60 years of operation, Gloria S.A.
obtained the ISO 9001 Certificate due to
the achievement of the highest quality standards
both in production and marketing areas,
as well as in management and organization.
During the
last years, Gloria has been increasingly
expanding its product portfolio, seeking
to meet the needs of its local consumers.
Thus, it currently carries a wide array
of brands, such as Gloria, Bonlé,
Pura Vida, Bella Holandesa, Mónaco,
Chicolac,Yomost, Yogurello, Multilac, Aruba
and La Mesa, with different products, such
as evaporated milk, fresh milk packed in
UHT boxes and bags, yogurts, cheese, ice
cream base, milk cream, liquid milk fudge
(blancmange), butter, jams, juices, soft
drinks, coffee and, canned fish and under
licensed agreement Tampico bBrands soft
drinks.
However,
these facts and dates are not the only factors
to be considered in the company’s
history. Each and every day of dedicated
hard work has made Gloria S.A. what it is
today, by contributing for more than six
decades to the nutrition of the national
population, thanks to the effort of the
men and women who worked towards its growth.
